WHAT THE HELL IS A ROCK CHUCK? lol
(A Yellow Bellied Marmot) is the largest of the Ground Squirrels, weighing between 5 and 11 pounds when fully grown (normally) at 15 years and can reproduce by age 2. Living in colonies of up to 20 animals, rock chucks cause severe damage to the landscape by digging huge holes in irrigation canal banks, pastures, and along side buildings.
Rock Chucks have a single breeding season each year which begins in the spring. They have a gestation period of one month and typically have litters of 5 to 9 pups. A male will have a harem of females and are antagonistic towards other males. In some instances when burrows are located near agricultural or farming operations, the rock chuck can be a pest because it forages on crops. Burrows can also be a hazard for farm equipment and livestock. Rock chucks spend most of their lives in their burrows, where tunnel systems may reach 10 to 70 meters in length and can be over a meter down.
Rock Chucks are diurnal animals, meaning they are awake during the day and sleep at night. They also have two dormant periods: they aestivate in late summer and hibernate in the winter. Rock Chucks are omnivores, eating grass, leaves, flowers, fruit, grasshoppers, and bird eggs. AND THERE YOU HAVE IT!

It is our 6th ANNIVERSARY for the Hannah Bates Memorial Rock Chuck Derby. We are so excited about the Derby this year and we are proud to be able to carry on this great event and we're grateful for the funding that it provides for the Hannah's Hope for Life Foundation. The Derby is a 3 day event held in Bliss, Idaho. Sportsmen of all ages from all over the United States & Canada compete to bring in the World’s Biggest Rock Chuck (16.53) and to win the grand prize gun safe. Many gun prizes are awared to the winners. The competition is between you and all other hunters vying for the title and the prizes. There is also a youth hunt with 4 categorie prizes. Last years Derby brought in over 500 registered contestants!!!

The Rock Chuck Derby was originally established by Frank Adams, owner of Outlaws and Angels Saloon in Bliss, Idaho. Frank was a great friend of Hannah’s and after Hannah had passed away Frank heard that she had taken her savings to buy new uniforms for her volleyball team. He was touched. Frank then decided to take the proceeds earned from the Rock Chuck Derby that year and donate the money to Hannah’s cause and the rest is history! The Hannah Bates Memorial Rock Chuck Derby is our biggest fundraiser of the year. In the last FIVE years we have raised over $300,000.00 !!!
